(WSYM) — Gas prices in Michigan are up 17 cents this week to an average of $2.64 per gallon, the highest price in the state since October 2019.
That average price is 35 cents more than this time last month and 15 cents more than this time last year.
An increase in gas prices was expected across the nation after winter weather in Texas affected Gulf coast refineries.
A GasBuddy analysis found 11 refineries in Texas and one in Kansas at least partially shut down due to the extreme cold weather. Very few refineries in the south have protection from the temperatures like they do in the north.
Until refineries resume normal operations, supply is expected to remain tight.
The most expensive gas is in Marquette and Jackson at $2.65, and metro Detroit at $2.64. The cheapest average is in Traverse City at $2.58, Flint at $2.62 and Saginaw at $2.63.
