If you're a teacher and have a passion for the wilderness, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is accepting applications to become a Teacher-Ranger-Teacher.

The Teacher-Ranger-Teacher program lets educators gain hands-on experience during the summer working side by side with park interpreters, researchers, law enforcement rangers, resource managers, maintenance rangers and other specialists.

If selected, TRTs will receive training, gain knowledge and experience and work at the lakeshore for eight weeks between June and August.

The intent is to provide well-rounded experiences for teachers serving with park rangers in national parks. During their experience, teachers will develop National Park Service materials to share with their students.

TRTs get a $3,000 stipend, three graduate credits from the University of Colorado, Denver and housing.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is recruiting two TRTs for summer 2019. One TRT will assist in the Dragonfly Mercury Project, where scientists help use dragonfly larvae as indicators of mercury contamination in the environment. The other will help create grade-specific programming designed to meet Next Gneration Science Standards, Common Core and MI Social Studies standards.
