Scripps National Spelling Bee Inspires Film & TV

We’re only a week out from the Scripps National Spelling Bee and to celebrate, Bradley Hasemeyer has rounded up a list of movies and TV shows that celebrate the ultimate spelling test.


1.  Spellbound

The Oscar-nominated documentary follows eight young competitors during the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. It’s also considered one of the top 25 documentaries of all-time.


2.  Are we There Yet? (TV Show)

Based on the hit movie starring Ice Cube, this fun episode featured a classic spelling bee skit with Dick Cavett.


3.  Akeelah and the Bee

The story of 11-year-old Akeelah Anderson's journey to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The movie also explores issues surrounding low income families in the African American community.


4.  Bad Words

Actor Jason Bateman plays a 40-year-old middle school dropout who enters the national quill spelling bee as an adult. Along the way, he befriends a young contestant, introducing him to the wilder side of life.


Spelling in p-o-p c-u-l-t-u-r-e, not only educating us, but entertaining us!
