Parents in the South Lyon School District are outraged, after learning about an incident with a camp counselor and a student in the shower area of a camp.
While the incident happened months ago, this is the first time they’re hearing about it.
Parents here say there is no excuse why they are just finding out.
The incident is only being described as inappropriate behavior. No other details are being given.
Robin Schmidt is a parent of a fifth grader at Salem Elementary. She along with a few dozen other parents in the South Lyon School District voiced their concerns after learning about the incident involving a student and a camp counselor during a fifth grade camping trip.
The location of the campground is the Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center, which is run by the Battle Creek School District.
District representatives were in attendance to talk about what protocols are in place to keep kids safe.
Parents at Thursday night's meeting say they’re very unhappy with the district’s response in notifying them - especially because a trip to the campground is scheduled for next week.
The South Lyon Schools Superintendent admits communication could have been better, but says the student's privacy involved in the incident was a factor.
They say moving forward, if camping is no longer a fit - the district will find another event for students.
As for Schmidt, she say canceling the camping trip is a let down - considering her son was looking forward to it.
The camp counselor has been fired. We're told the case is now being reviewed by a prosecutor to see if charges will be filed.
The fifth grade camping trip scheduled for next week has been postponed.
