Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged the parents of a 5-year-old child who was burned.

Lenard Smith, 36, and Evette Walker, 31, have both been charged with Second Degree Child Abuse in the case.

The incident happened at a home on Puritan on Friday.

According to Highland Park police, the five-year-old girl’s sweater caught on fire she was playing with a cigarette lighter - resulting in third degree burns.

The girl was badly burned, but according to police her parents didn’t call an ambulance until Sunday.

Highland Park police spokesperson Marli Blackmon says the little girl being burned may have been an accident, but deciding not to get her medical treatment was no accident.

Blackmon says it appears to be a clear case of neglect.

Neighbors can’t help but wonder why the girl’s parents didn’t call 911.

The five-year-old was listed in serious condition.
