Gay marriage may be legal nationwide in the United States, but a new survey shows that certain demographics worldwide are much, much less accepting of homosexuality.
According to a new poll, 52 percent of British Muslims – which comprise the country’s largest religious minority -- disagree that homosexuality should be legal in the UK. Note that these results are regarding homosexuality as a whole, not gay marriage specifically.
Furthermore, 47 percent think it’s inappropriate for gay people to teach in schools.
In contrast to Britain’s Muslim population, only a small fraction of the population as a whole disagreed that homosexuality should be legal.
According to Time, the findings are a result of face-to-face interviews with over 1,000 British Muslims, courtesy of the polling agency ICM. As a control sample, over 1,000 people across the country were interviewed over the phone.
The poll was conducted for a television program called, "What British Muslims Really Think."
While the views of British Muslims in general aligned with the population’s mainstream opinions, there were major differences in regards to sexuality and several other issues including gender, anti-Semitism, and political or religious violence.
The survey also found differences in views of terrorism between British Muslims and the general population, with British Muslims more likely to sympathize with terrorism “as a form of political protest," CNN further reports.
Support, however, was negligible with only 4% of Muslims saying they sympathized with terrorism – that’s compared to 1% support from the general public.
