Cleaning snow and ice off your car can be a hassle, but not taking the time to clear the chunks off your roof could cost you.

In response to 7 Action News reporter Jenn Schanz' story about an ice sheet shattering a school bus windshield in Shelby Township , one Twitter user explained the difficultly truck drivers have reaching the top of trailers.

Michigan State Police took to the platform to remind drivers the rules apply to everyone, regardless of vehicle.

"A truck driver is required to clear off the snow from their vehicle the same as a non-commercial vehicle," MSP wrote in a tweet. "If a[n] ice chunk comes off any vehicle and strikes another it is considered a crash and the driver of the non-cleaned off vehicle will be at fault and can be ticketed."

We've all seen the vehicle with the tall slab of snow on the roof just waiting to fly off. The thing is – that slab can slide forward onto the windshield obstructing the driver's view as much as it can fly off and impact your windshield.

Here's how Michigan State Police will enforce the measure:

To avoid a ticket and (make the roads a bit safer for everyone), be sure to properly clear off your vehicle, including all windows and the roof.
