Morel Mushroom hunting is now underway in Michigan. Mushrooms are beginning to pop up across the state and many people are posting their fungus findings on social media.
Morel mushrooms are known for their unique taste and hunting is very popular in Michigan. Typically mushroom hunters do not give out the location where the spot the elusive mushrooms. However, experts say morel mushrooms are typically found around certain trees including dead ash or dead elm trees.
The State Department of Natural Resources has updated its morel map to help mushroom hunters. The spots on the map list where there were wildfires in the state. Experts say morel mushrooms typically sprout in locations burned by wildfires. It is because the fungi are more likely to grow in areas where trees once grew.
If you are planning to go out mushroom hunting state health officials say make sure you find the real thing and that the mushrooms are safe to eat. You can check by looking inside the mushroom. Cut it open. Experts say it should be hollow in the middle with the stem connected to the head.
