Michigan's seniors are raking in the big bucks using new age tech.

Hospitality company Airbnb reports more than 1,300 Michiganders age 60 and up are sharing their homes for supplemental income using their platform.

In 2017, seniors earned $8.5 million in combined supplemental income, Airbnb says. They also earned 5-star reviews at a 90% rate, making them the best rated hosts of any other age group across Michigan.

Though home sharing is typically associated with millennials, these 1,300 seniors represent 20% of Airbnb's host community in Michigan.

Here are a few stats about the top ranking Michigan cities:

  • Most senior hosts? Traverse City - more than 100 active hosts are seniors
  • Highest-earning senior hosts? Detroit - typically earns $7,000 annually
  • Most frequently hosting senior hosts? Ann Arbor - typically shares home for 46 days
  • Highest percentage of senior hosts? Bellaire and Harbor Springs - 30% of local host communities are seniors
