Michigan Medicine ranks as No. 5 hospital in the nation

Michigan Medicine hospitals were ranked No. 5 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report's "best hospitals" for 2018-19. On top of that, Michigan Medicine had 10 surgical and medical specialties ranked in the nation's top 10.

“This No. 5 ranking is a reflection of our relentless commitment to putting patients first,” said Marschall Runge, M.D., Ph.D., who is executive vice president for medical affairs at the University of Michigan, chief executive officer of Michigan Medicine and dean of the U-M Medical School. “These rankings are heavily influenced by quality and safety measures. I am proud of the people in this organization who go above and beyond every day to ensure our high standards of quality and safety,”

The hospitals are nationally-ranked in 14 adult and 10 pediatric specialties, with high-performance in one adult specialty and nine procedures and conditions. 

The complex is made up of eight buildings and beyond the main campus, Michigan Medicine has 25 health centers in Ann Arbor and in southeast Michigan.

There are also 10 specialty areas that UM has ranked in the top 10 in the country. They are:

  • No. 1 - Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat)
  • No. 2 - Gynecology
  • No. 5 - Pulmonology
  • No. 5 - Urology 
  • No. 6 - Gastroenterology and GI surgery 
  • No. 7 - Geriatrics 
  • No. 8 - Nephrology 
  • No. 8 - Cardiology and heart surgery 
  • No. 8 - Ophthalmology 
  • No. 9 Neurology and Neurosurgery 

The hospitals above Michigan Medicine are: Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

To determine the rankings, U.S. News evaluates data from nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 specialties, nine adult procedures and conditions and 10 pediatric specialties.
