Gubernatorial candidates running for office spoke at the 'My Muslim Vote' rally in Dearborn on Sunday.
The event, put on by Mpower Change Action and Emgage Action, sought to educate Muslims on voting issues, register them to vote and give them a chance to meet candidates.
Headline speakers included a candidate for governor Abdul El-Sayed and recent political superstar Alexandria Ocasio Cortez who won the Democratic primary in New York’s 14th congressional district.
“We’ve always known if you have the courage, the conviction, in what you have to say and stand up to the corporations that dominate our politics and engage the people that everyone else doesn’t pay attention to, people, people of color, progressives, that you can win elections,” El-Sayed said.
“This is a movement,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “This is a progressive movement. I see his success as my success and vise versa. That’s what we're here to show people. That politics isn’t a zero-sum game, that we can all win together.”
The event was held at the Ford Community Performance and Art Center.
