A metro Detroit fisherman reeled in quite the catch last week in the Detroit river. Brad Smyth caught an Atlantic salmon weighing in at 9 pounds, 10 ounces.
Smyth operates Detroit Outdoor Adventureswhich offers private fishing charters on the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair.
He was out on the river May 10 when he brought in the fish that is rarely found in the Detroit River.
According to NOAA Fisheries, the salmon usually spend 2-3 years in freshwater before migrating to the ocean for 2-3 years after undergoing a "physiological transformation called smoltification that prepares them for life in a marine habitat."
They return to the rivers after 2-3 years in the ocean to spawn.
