LANSING, Mich. — When schools close, children lose two meals daily – breakfast and lunch. For low income families, these may be the only complete meals some children receive in a given day.
In light of the uncertainty created by the closure of schools and the increased threat of the Coronavirus, the YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing is committed and focused on making sure that children and adults have access to food without any barriers during these unprecedented times.
The YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing Healthy Living Mobile Kitchen Bus distributes meals to 7 sites Monday through Friday in the Greater Lansing area. The Mobile Kitchen is at each site for 20 minutes providing FREE healthy meals to kids and adults in need. Within the last four days we have served a total of 4,059 meals to the members of our community. To view a listing of our feeding locations and times, please visit our website at lansingymca.org/hlmk.
These Healthy Living Mobile Kitchen that is providing these services has been in operation since 2016. The mobile kitchen is a 54 passenger, handicap accessible bus that was donated by Kellie Dean, president of Dean Transportation. It has been retrofit with a demonstration kitchen which serves meals to children year-round in partnership with the Lansing School District’s food vendor SodexoMAGIC. The Mobile Kitchen served a total of 10,719 meals over the summer in 2019.
The Healthy Living Mobile Kitchen will continue to provide free meals to our community until schools reopen.
