In August of 1943, 2nd Lieutenant Elwood Bailey and four other Marine pilots intercepted enemy planes in Guadalcanal. After taking down two planes, Bailey was hit, and was last seen heading back to base. He was declared Missing in Action the next day.
75 years later, Bailey was buried in his hometown of Parma with full military rights at Chapel Cemetery. Hundreds were on hand for the ceremony on Saturday.
"People in this area are so welcoming, so friendly and so respectful of things like this, the traditions. A lot of people came out to show their respect, and as a family we certainly respect that in return."
The process began in 2015, when Bailey's remains were located in the Solomon Islands. He was flown into Detroit on Friday, and now lies next to his mother and father.
"Through the Marines and organizing, and bringing the casket here, it's been quite an interesting process, and it really speaks to the honor that they provide for our fallen heroes, it's really impressive what they military is willing to go through."
The Marines show dedication to find those that have fallen for our freedom, a tireless process to make sure their families receive closure.
"No man left behind is one of the slogans of the military. This proves that. I'm so appreciative of the fact that they never lose track of these people. They leave no man behind, given the option. And they've finally been able to bring one home."
