LANSING, Mich. — Witnesses of Monday night's shooting in Portland say the incident started as a personal dispute between the shooter and the victim. Residents of Portland say the incident is not representative of their city.
Police have four suspects in custody after the Labor Day shooting but people that live in Portland say they are not used to seeing police tape.
"This is the first shooting I've ever heard of in Portland," said the victim's friend.
"We've heard from several community members that this is disturbing, this isn't the Portland that they know," Chief Star Thomas, of the Portland Police Department said.
Portland Police Chief Thomas' sentiments were echoed by a friend of the victim who says the shooting hit too close to home.
"I was freaking out because one of my other buddies was there, it was scary knowing that happened down here," he said. "I fish a lot, walk my dog down here a lot, it's crazy...small town Portland."
He says Caiden Klaiflen got into a fight with the shooter and that both men agreed to meet at Bouge Flats to settle things and that's a big part of the reason the shooting has people so upset.
"Shooting another kid over something stupid...it's just very worrisome.," said the friend.
Chief Thomas said that despite what people think, this isn't how Portland is represented. She said her forces are doing everything they can to make sure the community is safe.
Police said four suspects will be charged, but no names have been released at this time.
We will let you know once they're arraigned.
