Williamston school board recall ousts one of four

Posted

A much-anticipated set of recalls for four Williamston school board members ended with one member losing his seat.

Voters recalled Greg Talberg (49 percent) in favor of Karen Potter (51 percent), in a close race amid a tense recall effort. Sarah Belanger, Nancy Deal and Christopher Lewis kept their seats, but neither escaped with more than 57 percent of the vote in their respective races.

Tuesday's recalls were among the most heated races on the ballot, which started with a petition earlier this year. Proponents were upset with a district policy that allowed students to be referred to by the gender they chose.

Also on the ballot for residents of the school district was a normally scheduled school board race for two seats. Jeffrey West and Julie Conley were elected to six-year terms.
