Williamston elementary schools closed Friday for mold inspection

The entire Williamston Schools elementary campus will be closed Friday for a mold inspection.

The district says an initial inspection found mold on some exterior locations, but none inside any of the buildings.

The closure includes Discovery, Explorer, and Kids' Corner and Little Hornets.

In a letter from the Superintendent Dr. Adam Spina he stated:

An inspection of Discovery Elementary has indicated the presence of mold on some exterior locations but no presence of mold on the inside of the building. The exterior finding is most likely due to improper drainage caused by seals failing on the building’s gutters.  We have ordered additional tests to include interior and exterior air quality assessments to be conducted to verify the inspection findings. The test results are expected to be known on Friday evening.

While the inspector did not express concern with the findings, out of an abundance of caution, the entire elementary campus, to include Discovery Elementary, Explorer Elementary, and Kids’ Corner and Little Hornets programs, will be closed on Friday, October 12, 2018. This will provide time for additional interior inspections and for the test results to become available.  The entire campus will be closed because of the shared spaces located inside Discovery.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience closing the campus will cause, but I feel it is important to acquire additional information on the condition of the building before allowing students to return.  I will provide an update tomorrow on this situation.
