Dewitt native and sexual assault survivor Jordyn Wieber spoke to a crowd of students, faculty, and staff at Michigan State University Thursday about her experience as a survivor of sexual assault.

"I think that coming here and giving them a little bit of hope and giving them my perspective and my story can inspire them and especially move forward, but also use their voice in a positive way and help me create all these changes we're looking for," she said.

She said coming forward was a difficult thing to do, but she felt a great responsibility to do so.

"I just sort of realized that my voice was very powerful and even though i didn't want to, I knew it was something I could do to really help all the other survivors and my voice was a strong force."

Kaitlyn Basel and Melody Posthuma Vanderveen came to the event to support their fellow sister survivor.

"We all need to stand together. if we're not together then we're not the army that we are, and we intend to be an army," said Kaitlyn Basel, a Nassar survivor.

During her speech, Wieber called on MSU's interim president John Engler to work with survivors because they are not the enemy.

She said wants to help MSU move forward and rebuild, and this whole movement has empowered her more than ever before.

"We all go through different things in our lives and some of them are really horrible. There's gotta be a reason why that happens and there's gotta be something positive that can come out of it in the end. I think that's what this is for me," Wieber said.
