Governor Gretchen Whitmer is declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

To raise awareness, hundreds of pinwheels were planted in the Michigan State Capitol lawn on Thursday.

Michigan's U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow was a featured speaker at the event.

In 1982, Stabenow co-sponsored legislation that created the Children's Trust Fund.

The organization is housed within the U.S. Department of Human Services.

Experts note that there is a tendency to focus on what happens after a child is neglected or abused.

The Children's Trust Fund is seeking to focus on how to prevent neglect or abuse by supporting young families, supporting children, and creating tools for parents and kids to be successful.

The pinwheel is the national symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention.

According to Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services 37,738 children were abused or neglected in the state last year.
