White out conditions force escorts on Mackinac Bridge

MACKINAW, Mich. — The winter weather has forced the state of Michigan to put some pretty extraordinary safety precautions in place on the Mackinac Bridge.

On Monday, the bridge authority is forcing some vehicles to get an escort as they cross. That applies to anything tall such as U-Hauls, semi-trucks, cars with bikes or luggage on top, and pickups with campers. Those vehicles are prone to tip over because of the strong winds whipping across the bridge. The escorts are there to keep them from going too fast.

By mid-afternoon Monday, the bridge was practically a white-out traveling from St. Ignace. The 30th anniversary of the death of Leslie Pluhar comes in September of 2019. She died when a 48 mile-per-hour wind gust blew her Yugo off the bridge. It's the only known case of a car accidentally going over the side.

The bridge authority offers drivers for anyone who's not comfortable making it themselves.
