For the second time in a month, gastroenteritis, also known as the stomach flu, is going around Mid-Michigan.
Doctor Patricia Nakfoor at the 98 point 6 Emergicenter tells us it's an inflammation of the stomach and small intestine that normally passes after a few days of misery. It causes vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, a headache and fever. The vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration so it's important to drink water. Sports drinks can help too.
If you can't keep fluids down, you may need to get an IV to replenish your fluids. Doctors may also prescribe anti-nausea medicine.
You should stay home from school or work until you've gone 24 hours without throwing up. See a doctor immediately if you have blood in your vomit or stool.
