What's Going Around: Bronchitis

Posted

It's not just the flu keeping kids home from school in Mid-Michigan. Doctors say they're seeing more cases of bronchitis.

Bronchitis is the swelling of the lining of your bronchial tubes. Dr. Susan Fedewa at 98point6 Emergicenter says people who have bronchitits usually cough up thick, discolored mucus. Other symtpoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, a slight fever and chills, and chest discomfort.

Symptoms of bronchitis should improve within about a week or so. If they last longer than three weeks, or get worse you should see your doctor.

Bronchitis is usually caused by the same viruses that trigger the cold and the flu.

To prevent yourself from getting it, Dr. Fedewa recommends washing your hands and avoiding cigarette smoke.
