What you need to know to stay safe while shoveling this winter

LANSING, Mich. — It's important to know how to stay safe while shoveling snow.

It's best to avoid shoveling right after you wake up or eat a heavy meal, as doctors say that's when your blood is more prone to clotting.

When you do start shoveling, make sure to shovel lots of small loads instead of fewer heavy ones.

It's also good to take frequent 15 minute breaks, and to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

It's important to remember to pace yourself when shoveling, because a lot of cities have rules about how long you can take to clear your sidewalks.

In most cities, you have 24 hours after a snowfall has ended to remove the snow.

If you do not take care of removing the snow, the city will ticket you.

For example, in Lansing, it's a minimum penalty of $149.
