What to do during an active shooter situation

Posted

What would you do in an active shooter situation? Would you know what to do if there was an "active-shooter situation" at your work. The National Guard is trying to make sure people are as prepared as possible for that scenario. FOX 47's Rilwan Balogun tells us about the training BWL employees went through in February.

"Sometimes there's not going to be enough time in that 911 call to sit back and just be a victim."

Instead of being a victim the National Guard wants you to be able to react fast.

General Mike Stone of the National Guard says "In the old days the training was how to hide and run for cover. This training will show the audience different methods in what's worked and what's worked and not worked. To be a little more aggressive and counter the threat and take the threat out."

General Stone says as soon as a gunman enters your office there should be a plan in place.

"You know you should have an escape route or some plan of what you're going to do if somebody walks into the door that's unstable or has malicious intent."

That's why the National Guard and Lansing’s Board of Water & Light are working to prepare as many workplaces as they can.

"It’s not something that just a police agency can do or just a government agency can do, it really has to be a community response."

BWL’s emergency manager Trent Atkins hopes the training scenarios will make people think and start talking.

"If an intruder enters a room enters a facility. It's not going to take minutes, it's going to take seconds for that event to end."

It only takes seconds for anything to happen but now Atkins says they're better prepared.

"Just like everybody else this conversation is happening at the BWL and we're taking measures currently to not only enhance our policies but train our people."

General Stone says while the training won't stop the shootings, he hopes it can save lives.

The National Guard tells FOX 47 News it's important to have at least one person in every office trained on what to do in an active shooter situation.

It’s working to organize more training sessions for the public and private sectors.
