LANSING, Mich. — Snow is one thing, but adding on the cold is making this upcoming weather something Mid-Michigan hasn't seen in decades. That's why authorities want to make sure you're prepared.
"It's not going to be a nice day tomorrow. We're looking at a half foot or more by the evening rush hour and that will cause some problems," Rob Dale of Ingham County Homeland Security and Emergency Management said.
Snow is expected to hit at the worst times Monday, especially during the morning commute, which is something officials are taking into consideration. The City of Lansing is already gearing up for what's to come.
"We're getting ready. Last week we got another delivery of salt and we made sure all of our vehicles are ready and we will probably salt in advance of that and continue to salt and plow throughout the event and afterward."Andy Kilpatrick, who is the Public Service Director for the City of Lansing said.
And it's not just the snow, temperatures are expected to drop drastically this week, which can be dangerous.
"The details of the forecast might change over the next day or so but really the end result is going to be the same. Whether it's 35 below or 40 below Wednesday morning, it's really not going to make a difference to your body. Don't get caught up in the specifics. Realize that this is life-threatening, this cold and this snow combination," Dale added.
Other officials say it's important to make sure hydrants are clear of snow. If you use a generator, make sure it is outside. In addition, Capt. Steve Funk of the Delta Township. Fire Department said to make sure accumulating snow isn't blocking your vents.
"All of our furnaces have a vent. A lot of them vent outside our house now and the snow can pile up and block that vent, and then that can lead to back up of CO into your home. And if you don't have a CO detector, that can be a life-threatening emergency," Capt. Funk said.
Officials also added in weather like this it's important to check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly to make sure they are doing OK.
