Ways to save energy in your home

HOLT, Mich. — The dangerously cold weather can leave you looking for ways to keep the heat from escaping your home.

The thought of throwing off the grid had consumers rushing to supply stores looking for ways to cut back on energy to preserve heat and power during the polar vortex.

“A clean furnace filter in your furnace keeps it from over-working and also reduces your energy in the house”, said Gary Dekett from Byrum Ace Hardware in Holt.

The staff kept busy Thursday afternoon helping customers select products to winterize their homes.

“This is a twin draft guard. It slides underneath your door so it keeps it sealed on the inside and also the outside.

Another way to keep the cold draft out is by weather stripping your doors and windows.

Proper application will create an air-tight seal.

“Window insulation kits and these just go on the inside of the window and keep the heat inside rather than leaking out”, Dekett explained.

Air deflectors are also a good option to help redirect heat away drapes and furniture.

“This is an air deflector”, Dekett continued as he held the product.

“It's made for floor vents. When the air is coming up out of your floor vent it goes off the deflector and sends it out in the room across your floor which is a good thing because a lot of people's water pipes and what not runs through their floor joist so making sure that the floor is heated can keep pipes from freezing”, Dekett said.
