Student's at Waverly High School skipped a portion of class last week to have their voice heard and now those students are getting what they asked for.
Some members of the Waverly school board met with students Wednesday afternoon to talk about a lack in progress in teacher contract talks and talk out other tensions.
Students gathered to protest on January 26 outside of Waverly High School. The school was placed under code yellow, a code not allowing anyone to come into the school or leave the school. Students ignored the code and protested anyway.
They were upset after members of the school board walked out during a meeting on January 23 where police were even called to the school..
Waverly's school board president Britton Slocum told FOX 47 News Wednesday night board members didn't walk out.
"The mics were off and they couldn't hear us do a roll call vote," said Slocum. "We did a roll call vote from my left all the way to my right to go into closed session and in that session we discussed stuff that was client attorney privilege."
Wednesday night's meeting lasted for over three hours.
Students say they were happy to meet and present their ideas to board members.
"I'm just glad that I get to actually see some of them and have that one on one conversation," said Sage, a student at Waverly High School.
Waverly Community Schools Superintendent Terry Urquhart had said it was likely students who chose to protest would be 'disciplined appropriately'.
A student tells FOX 47 News they'll participate in community service work by filling up backpacks for students less fortunate.
Students say they don't have anymore protests planned, at least in the near future.
Slocum says they'll schedule monthly student body meetings at the high school where student leaders can meet with administrators.
Waverly teachers continue to work on last years contract. A new one may not be approved for a while.
