Summer might be ending a few days earlier Waverly students. The superintendent wants school to start on August 29.

FOX 47 News has confirmed Waverly Community schools is among the Lansing area school districts that has applied for and was granted a waiver from the Michigan Department of Education to start school before Labor Day.

According to a report from Waverly's Board of Education meeting Monday night, the superintendent is recommending Waverly's first day be August 29, 2016.

The report says Waverly would have the same starting date as nine of the twelve school districts in the Ingham Intermediate School District.

The report says by starting before Labor Day, students are not in school late in the month of June when the weather is warmer and not ideal for learning.

The superintendent's recommendation says students will also still be able to enjoy the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Waverly says students are on campus for football games, practices and band events in the month of August anyway.

Williamston Community schools also wants to start school on Monday, August 29th. Williamston plans to make a formal announcement when the district receives written approval from the state.

The Lansing State Journal reports Okemos and Haslett have also requested permission to start before Labor Day.

Last month, school districts in Jackson County including Jackson Public Schools changed their calendars to begin school in August instead of September.

Labor Day falls on September 5th this year, which means the first day of school for public schools if they haven't requested a waiver for an early start time would be September 6, 2016.

The reaction from parents so far hasn't been positive. Some say they have made plans to travel in August and are not happy the early start dates will cut into their vacation.
