Vote to rename Lansing street after civil rights activist César E. Chavéz set for October 30

Lansing City Council will vote next week on whether to rename a street in Old Town after labor leader and civil rights activist César E. Chavéz.

The vote which many expected to happen at Monday night's council meeting, is now scheduled for October 30 according to the Lansing State Journal.

The effort to have Grand River Avenue in Lansing renamed after Chavéz has been an ongoing fight for years, dating back to the 1990s.

The street was renamed after Chavéz in 1994, but the name was changed back after the issue was put on a ballot for voters to decide. The city's memorial review board gave the green light this summer for East and West Grand River Avenue to be renamed César E. Chavéz Avenue.

There is mixed reaction to the issue. Some say it is time for the name change to happen, and argue Chavéz should be recognized in Lansing like Martin Luther King Junior and Malcolm X. Others including many businesses in Old Town are against the effort.

"We've spent so long building up this identity: Turner and Grand River, that's how you find us that's where it's at." said Cecilia Garcia-Linz.

Businesses say the name change could cost them thousands of dollars. The vote is set for October 30 in City Council chambers.
