Volunteers out for "I Love My City" campaign

Antonio Villarreal has been cutting hair for hours. He's giving free cuts to the homeless in South Lansing.

"I want these guys to be able to feel confident in their selves again and in everything else too," Villarreal said. "As soon as you get a fresh haircut, you know, you just feel 10 times better."

He's just one out of hundreds of people who spent their Sunday helping others.

It all started with members at South Church of the Nazarene who wanted to go beyond their call.

"Instead of being just a building to come here and be. We wanted to make sure that we went out to our community so they could see that we're here and that we love them" said youth pastor, Travis Myers.

They partnered with 20 other churches and started, "I Love My City," an all day volunteer campaign focused on improving Lansing.

Including fixing up Lansing schools like Everett High School.

"The stadium has had several layers of paint over the years," said Jennifer Nelson as he scrapes the old paint off. "Every time we redo this we have to do this to take the old paint off."

Volunteers like Jennifer Nelson and Jill Johnson spent the day working with students and repainting the bleachers at Everett High School.

"If it looks good, you're gonna feel good and you're gonna do more yourself as a student there to help keep it up and make it look nice" Johnson said.

Hoping others will follow in their footsteps and love their city.
