LANSING, Mich. — Volunteers are working to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters during the cold.

People from Holy Cross and Advent Ministries were out in Lansing Thursday morning, checking places where the homeless are known to go when the temperature drops.

"I think it's important as a community that if there are people experiencing homelessness that we are taking care of our community members whether they're house or not, young or old," said Elsa Heenan, a Holy Cross volunteer.

"It's important as a community we come together to help those in need."

Volunteers check places like stores, fast food restaurants and libraries. Police checked outdoor gathering places.
