VISA restrictions impact Mackinac Island businesses

Posted

A change in US VISA rules for foreign workers, could make it tough for employers on Mackinac Island this year. Hotels, restaurants and landscaping companies hire close to 1,000 international workers every summer.

They need H2B VISAs to legally work in the US, but legislation that allows more than 60,000 seasonal workers to return for the summer was not renewed. It could put Mackinac Island's Mission Point Resort in a bind, because it hires 117 H2B workers every year.

A delegation from Michigan, including more than a dozen employers from the Mackinac area are lobbying lawmakers to allow more workers to come in. The group is part of the National H2B Coalition.
