The Mayor of Lansing also sent out a statement after the shooting.
Here is the Mayor's full statement:
“Last night a 17-year-old was shot and killed at Ferris Park. The loss of life is felt by the entire community. Our hearts go out to the family and friends that are directly impacted by this tragedy. We must continue our efforts to prevent the senseless loss of life, and ensure the safety and future of all of our residents, especially our young people.
There were also reports of other shooters throughout the city. These reports are unsubstantiated. There was only one incident, and the Lansing Police Department will do everything they can to find the shooter and any persons that may have been involved.
My thoughts and prayers go out to our Lansing community, and also to the residents of Dayton and El Paso, but we need to do more than pray. It’s time for action. Local officials are preempted by the state from doing anything on guns. Cities either need to be given the authority to do something, or we need the state or federal government to actually act against gun violence and the proliferation of illegal guns. It’s time to do something now. Burying our heads in the sand solves nothing. We need to act now.”
