LANSING, Mich. — If you were hoping to pick up some vape juice last minute today, you're already too late.
A statewide ban on flavored vaping juices took effect Wednesday morning.
The emergency ban to prevent the sales of flavored vape products was set forth by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The ban effects everything from selling, distributing, and advertising flavored vaping products. Due to the ban, retailers will either have to throw out leftover products or send them back to suppliers.
If retailers fail to comply, they'll be fined or could be sent to jail. Violators could see up to six months in prison and a fine up to 200 dollars.
The ban is set to last for at least 180 days.
The Attorney General's Office said a hearing discussing the future of the ban will continue next week.
The hearing will pick back up on October 8.
The ban was in response to concerns about advertising targeting kids, and recent health scares sweeping the country involving vaping related illnesses and deaths.
Last week health officials said hundreds more Americans have been reported to have a vaping-related breathing illness, and the death toll has risen to 16.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 805 confirmed and probable cases have been reported, up 52% from the 530 reported a week ago.
At this point, illnesses have occurred in almost every state.
