A Mid-Michigan family sleeps through a break in and wakes up to a disaster in their home.
Brand new furniture was damaged, racial slurs painted inside and outside the home.
The owners of the home invited FOX 47's Alani Letang inside to tell her about the experience. The owner also requested FOX 47 News keep her identity private.
The owner says she's traumatized and that her home doesn't feel like home anymore.
"I don't even want to drink out of my coffee pot, what did they do to that, did they do anything to that, we've all been violated, its a mess, its destroyed, why" the homeowner said.
The home owner says her family is loving, welcoming, and keep to themselves. They haven't had any trouble in the seven years they've lived in Grand Ledge.
"That's what's so puzzling, I have no idea who would do this, why they would do this" homeowner said.
They painted the walls with racially-charged grafitti, and cut up the couch with a knife.
The family's garden hose was used...at full blast...to flood the first floor
She tells me she is actually thankful for it... because that's what caused the short in the wires that set off the fire alarm -- waking them up... and scaring off the suspects before the got upstairs
"We heard absolutely nothing, and that's the scary part what would they have done if they made it upstairs" she said.
They were not hurt and the family tells me they are grateful for that.
But the wife's heart aches over losing something she can never replace
"I lost my mom and they have paint all over her Bible, when she past it was with her, I was with her, that Bible was with her" she said.
And inside that.
"We have ten grand babies, all of their ultrasound pictures were in there even the one we lost after she was born" the wife said.
Eaton County Sheriff arrived within minutes, to take away several bags of evidence, but she tells me every minute she had to wait, felt like ten.
"Even though I heard them I was still asking the dispatcher, where are they where are they, I just wanted them to get there and catch these evil people" homeowner said.
The vandalism might be done,but her emotions are not.
"It's like I'm in a nightmare and I cant wake up" the wife said.
She tells me that she doesn't believe she was the intended target
The homeowners estimate the damage at around $10,000 to $15,000 they're working with their insurance company to fix the things that can be repaired.
