A rollover accident forced a portion of a highway to shut down early Tuesday morning after a scene at a local residence earlier that day.
Around 1:30 a.m. at the 3500 block of Sally Mae Terrace, a 33-year-old black male had an argument with his ex-girlfriend and shots were fired in the air.
According to Lansing Township Police, he left the scene but returned to the same address around 4 a.m. and threatened the people inside.
He then took off in a white pickup truck and was spotted by police at St. Joeseph and Waverly roads. They began a chase but the driver ended up ran off the road and got stuck on the curb.
An officer went to assist the man when the driver continued driving in the direction of the officer, allegedly running him over.
The chase continued onto I-496 Eastbound, where he hit another car. That person has minor injuries.
The suspect at this point rolled his white pickup truck, partially into the Westbound lanes of 496.
The truck was badly damaged in the accident and had to be towed away. The driver is in the hospital with minor injuries. Police say alcohol was involved.
Police did recover a weapon inside the truck that they don't think is registered.
The officer is okay.
Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-496 had to be shutdown while emergency crews worked the scene. Both lanes of I-496 have since reopened.
