A 19-year-old Jackson County man has been charged in the Tuesday night shooting that killed a woman.

Anthony Gelia was arraigned Wednesday on charges of open murder, home invasion and felony firearm. The judge denied bond.

Jackson Police say officers were called to a home in the 400 block of Jefferson Street around 8:30pm Tuesday for a female victim who had been shot in the back. Police have yet to say what circumstances led to the shooting.

The victim was identified early Wednesday as 26-year-old Brittany Southwell. She died as a result of her injuries hours after the shooting. A suspect was quickly developed and a broadcast was put out to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Gelia, who police believe knew the victim, was taken into custody shortly after 9pm Tuesday during a traffic stop in the area of Wheaton Road and Silver Lake Highway.

Because Gelia is charged with open murder, he faces up to life in prison if convicted. His next court hearing is scheduled for November 18. We will be tracking this case in the coming days and weeks.
