EATON COUNTY, Mich. — Lou Anna K. Simon, the former president of Michigan State University, is in court for another Preliminary Exam.
Simon has been charged with four counts of lying to police officers over the Larry Nassar investigation.
Witness testimony that says Simon knew about a 2014 investigation into Nassar’s conduct is expected in the courtroom. Prosecutors say Simon attended a meeting in which Nassar’s conduct was discussed.
At approximately 10 a.m. on Monday, the state called its first witness in the Simon hearing, Kristine Moore.
She worked in the MSU Office for Inclusion during the time Simon was president.
Prosecutor Scott Teter showed the witness MSU's sexual harassment policy and she said that she believed Simon signed off on the policy.
She says that she called Amanda Tomashow who told her about the abuse she suffered by Larry Nassar, this happened in 2014.
Moore says the next morning she sent an email to her boss detailing what Tomashow told her - the state entered that as evidence.
Moore said that Nassar emailed her directly and told her that he would be seeing patients again while the investigation was still going on. She says she notified several people that investigation was not over.
Moore has an attorney in the courtroom that is being paid by Michigan State.
Simon's defense attorney told the judge that the state gave him "thousands" of pages of evidence on a thumb drive Monday morning. Judge says she will deal with that if the documents are found to be admissible.
The second witness was called by the state at approximately 11:45 a.m., it was Paulette Granberry Russell, who is the Director of the Office of Inclusion at MSU. She also has a paid for by MSU attorney.
At the time of Tomashow's complaint, she was running the Title IX office.
Granberry Russell was asked to review a calendar that shows one of those previously mentioned meetings with Simon in 2014.
Previously, prosecutors said Simon had noted in her handwriting about the meeting and they say, ‘Sports Med Doctor Nassar, SA,’ was written on the outside of a folder. They say that stands for ‘Sexual Assault.’
Simon’s lawyers deny the meeting took place and that the entire investigation in politically motivated.
Simon had been the President of Michigan State University since 2005 and her lawyer says when the case was exposed, Simon fired both Nassar and Dean William Strampel - who now faces felony charges of his own.
Court adjourned on Monday just before 12:30 PM.
Her preliminary exam continues Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in Eaton County.
