SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Jackson police say a suspect is dead after an hours-long standoff late Wednesday into early Thursday morning.

The situation began around 9 p.m. Wednesday when a woman called 9-1-1 from a home in the 1300 block of Westlane Street in Summit Township.

When police arrived at the home, just west of Ella Sharp Park Golf Course, a man opened fire at police, officers said.

At least one Jackson County sheriff's deputy was hit several times. In a press release, Jackson County Sheriff Steven Rand says the deputy was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police believe that's when the man, who has not been identified, took off to another home.

He was found dead several hours later inside that second home, according to police. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says the 34-year-old man from Flint died from his injuries after being shot by deputies.

Deputies involved in the shooting will now be placed on administrative leave pending the completion of an investigation by the Jackson County Major Crimes Task Force and review by the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office.

The major crimes task force is made up of detectives from the Jackson Police Department, Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety, the Michigan State Police, and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Members of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office will not be participating in the investigation because of the direct involvement in the incident, the sheriff's office said.
