JACKSON, Mich. — Police have released the name of the person found dead by the side of the road in Jackson and the suspected cause of death.
Police in Jackson County say that at 3:13 a.m. officers were dispatched to North Elm Street, which is south of I-94, for a report of a body lying next to the road.
The officers located Steven Georgopoulos, 62, of Blackman Township, deceased.
Investigators say that Georgopoulos had been struck by a vehicle, which left the scene.
A medical examiner at the scene told News 10 there were enough car parts found at the scene that could fill a small bag. One of those car parts was a broken off mirror from a vehicle.
Police have taken those items found near the body as evidence in Georgopoulos's death.
At around 9:00 a.m., a public safety officer from Blackman-Leoni Township answered an unrelated service all in the 500 block of South Rosewood in Leoni Township.
At that time, he noticed a 2006 Dodge Caravan parked in a driveway with damage consistent with striking something.
The missing parts on that van also matched the parts left at the crime scene.
The owner of the vehicle, a 35-year old female from Leoni Township, was questioned by police.
The van has been impounded for investigative purposes.
The investigation is revealing that the actual car/pedestrian crash happened at approximately 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.
