JACKSON, Mich. — What was meant to be a night out for a good time, quickly turned violent for Jose Ramirez and his friends.

"I thought it was going to be safe to come out here and have a few drinks because I live four houses down," said Ramirez.

He says it was a calm night at Duffy's Food and Spirits with no drama.

"Everybody was enjoying themselves, having a good time and then all of a sudden we heard gunshots," said Ramirez.

Jackson police say those shots were fired at around 1:18 a.m. Friday outside of the bar. When they arrived at the scene, police found 25-year-old James Henry Cooper- Robertson lying unresponsive in the street.

Cooper-Roberton was immediately taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Health in Jackson, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police have not made any arrests or issued any warrants. They are still looking for the person who fired the shots. They're hoping Duffy's camera footage will help.

The bar re-opened on Friday.

Ramirez says many lives are forever changed, encouraging everyone to pray for the family.

"A lot of people knew the guy. Everybody was sad. Everybody was in tears. It was a pretty sad night," said Ramirez.

FOX 47 reached out to friends on Facebook.

"He would've given the shirt off his back for anyone in need. He always had a smile and the best advice you could ask for. He was like the big brother I never had," said Rani Williams.
