LANSING, Mich. — Committee members from both the Michigan House and Senate met Wednesday to discuss the state department’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The committee is working to make sure the state government is transparent and accountable during the pandemic in addition to figuring out how to implement best practices for future state crises, according to a press release.

The office of the state employer director said by the end of this week, all state departments should have approved plans to come back to the office. However, there is no set date on when state employees will return.

She said each department is coming up with its own plan because they all work differently. For example, many DNR officers don’t work in confined office spaces.

Although the return to work plans are expected to be approved later this week, state employees won’t be heading back any time soon.

“It doesn’t mean that we’re authorizing people to come back into state government, particularly as we’re seeing an upswing in the COVID cases, a lot more detail in terms of how to bring people back and make them feel safer in the workplace given that COVID is still predominant in our culture right now,” said Liza Estlund Olson, director of the office of state employer.

Director Olson was also asked about plans to reopen local unemployment offices. She said they’re still working on plans to do that safely.
