UPDATE: House passes resolution guaranteeing electronic-privacy rights

Posted

A proposed state constitutional amendment that would require police to get a search warrant to access electronic data or communications has passed the State House.

As we first reported Monday, the amendment came about because of a system called "Hailfire" that lets phones connect to police instead of a cell tower and then allows police to access call info and other data.

The resolution passed the House with a two-thirds majority.

It needs to pass by the same margin in the Senate to go on the November 2018 ballot.
