On Tuesday, September 18, three people were taken to the hospital after a pickup truck crashed into a garbage truck in Jackson County Tuesday morning.
The Columbia Township Police Department says officers were dispatched to the crash at Riverside Road, east of McKinney Road around 7:49 a.m.
A Modern Waste refuse truck carrying two employees was traveling eastbound on Riverside, making stops to dump trash from garbage carts into the back of the truck. With the Modern Waste truck stopped and warning lights flashing, a pickup truck carrying a man and woman, also traveling eastbound rear-ended the Modern Waste truck, police said.
The pickup truck was pulling a pop-up camper.
The Modern Waste employee, 27-year-old Justin Pratt of Jackson, on the driver-side of the vehicle was struck and temporarily pinned between his truck and the pickup.
Pratt was admitted to Henry Ford Allegiance with critical injuries and is still undergoing treatment.
The second Modern Waste employee was not struck nor injured, and was off to the passenger side of the truck, police said.
The male driver of the pickup, 55-year-old Kenneth Eggleston, as well as his female passenger, 57-year-old Kathy Eggleston, were both transported by ambulance to Henry Ford Allegiance Health with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials say that the F-150 was totaled and the waste truck had minor damage.
Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the accident. The driver of the pickup reported blinding sunlight at hindering his vision at the time of the crash, police said.
Michigan State Police assisted at the scene with accident reconstruction. When investigations are complete, the reports will be forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor for review.
