LANSING, Mich. — DeWitt Charter Township police have declared DeWitt High School secure after a threat Friday morning that caused the school to go into lockdown.
The threat was a message written on a bathroom wall.
While it was investigated, the high school was placed into lockdown and it was decided that an early release of students would take place.
All other schools in the area remained in session as scheduled, but they were put on a "soft lockdown" as a precautionary measure, according to the school.
A soft lockdown means that students and staff were to stay indoors.
A search of the entire building was conducted by law enforcement, which included utilizing police K-9 units, according to DeWitt Charter Twp. police.
They were not able to locate anything threatening and confirmed that the building was secure.
Superintendent, Dr. John Deiter, released a statement to the parents with more details about what caused the lockdown.
Deiter said that students were gathering for a homecoming assembly when they received a report about a threatening message on the wall in a boys bathroom stall.
In the statement Deiter congratulated the students, staff, and parents for the "amazing job" they all did by leaving the building in an orderly manner.
All onsite activities have been canceled for the evening.
The varsity football game will still be played at Lansing Everett at 7 p.m.
This is an active investigation and anyone with information should contact DeWitt Charter Township Police at 517-669-6578.
