Unpredictable Michigan winters pose problems for energy companies, drivers

Weather in mid-Michigan can be tough to predict. Drivers on Monday had to deal with tough weather conditions that caused several accidents across the area, including some on I-96.

Five cars slid off the road east of Webberville on I-96 westbound. The Livingston county dispatch says it was because of slippery conditions.

To combat that, city and county salt trucks were out in force salting roads to try and reduce ice and make the roads safer.

Similarly, power companies like Consumers Energy also were keeping up with the weather, ready in case anything happens.

"We've got a plan ready so that we can have crews available if and when a storm does hit," explains Terry DeDoes of Consumers Energy.

Ice can wreak havoc on power lines, and DeDoes says each storm gives Consumers a chance to improve:

"Each time there's a storm we are learning more and more on how we can respond more quickly and efficiently."

With small storms like the one on Monday, they get a lot of chances.

"The weather in January, it's very unpredictable," laughs DeDoes.
