Dozens of undocumented immigrants rallied at the State Capitol Tuesday, demanding drivers licenses for everyone.
The immigrants walked from Grand Rapids to Lansing over the past five days, raising awareness about what they call an unfair driver's license law.
Undocumented immigrants were banned from getting drivers licenses in Michigan in 2007. Marchers said that puts them in constant fear of being arrested and separated from their families. Hector Rubio-Garcia said, "In order for us to be freely here, we have to have a drivers license for everyday life. Because it's part of necessity that you have to have to get to school, go to work, drop off the kids at school."
Legislation was introduced in the State House last year that would give undocumented immigrants an I.D. and drivers license. The bills never came up for a vote.
