Two killed in wrong way crash, alcohol possibly a factor

LEONI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WSYM) - Two people are dead in a wrong way crash happening on a Mid-Michigan highway.

The Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety was called to U.S. 127 near Page Avenue in Leoni Township for a head-on crash around 8 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses say a Mini Cooper was heading southbound in northbound lanes of U.S. 127 when the driver hit a Ford Escape traveling northbound.

Both the driver of the Mini Cooper and Ford Escape were killed in the collision.

Three others traveling as passengers in the Ford Escape were taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Health and are expected to survive.

A 50-year-old woman from Parma Township was driving the Mini Cooper and a 42-year old man from Hudson was driving the Ford Escape.

Its possible alcohol is a factor in this crash however police are waiting for the results of a toxicology report to confirm.

Names of the victims have not been released.

U.S. 127 was closed down between Page Avenue and South Street in Leoni Township while officers performed an investigation.

Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson and Summit Fire Department and Jackson Community Ambulance.

According to Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety, this accident is the 3rd serious accident that the department has responded to in the last 24-hours, resulting in a total of three fatalities and one person suffering life threatening injuries.
