LANSING, Mich. — Eastbound I-496 at Cedar Street in Lansing is closed due to flooding.

This isn't going to be the only area drivers will see closed or with heavy flooding Thursday.

If a driver come across an area that is flooded try to find an alternative route, but if there is no other way to get around the flooding measure the depth of the water.

Use the cars driving in front to help measure the depth of the water.

If the water is up to the wheel rims or higher the driver should test their brakes on a clear road.

According to Progressive, if the brakes are too wet and not stopping the car the driver should press gently on the brake with their left foot while continuing speed with their right.

Another major risk is hydroplaning.

Drivers can hydroplane in weather like these floods when driving only 35 mph.

Drivers should give themselves ample time to get to work Thursday and driver slower than usual because the roads are dangerous.
