Truck swerves to miss stopped patrol car, hits other car

While behind a stalled semi truck that had broken down on the freeway, a vehicle at a high rate of speed swerved to miss a deputy’s vehicle and struck another vehicle, the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The crash happened about 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The semi truck was broken down on the ramp from northbound I-69 to westbound I-96 in Delta Township. The semi was sitting in the right travel lane.

The deputy was called in to help slow down traffic, the office reports. The deputy saw a white Dodge pickup traveling at a high rate of speed. The truck swerved to miss the patrol car and struck another northbound vehicle.

Another deputy that was was further down I-96 and was able to stop the truck on westbound I-96 near Grand River. The truck was badly damaged, and would not start after it came to a stop.

The suspect driver was found to be intoxicated and had alcohol in the vehicle, the office reports.

The driver was arrested and lodged for operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and other infractions.

No one was injured in the crash.
